Despite the use of railways as a means of transportation has multiple advantages in the import and export of goods, it has not yet managed to consolidate itself as a preferential option in European logistics. However, this year a change of focus has been observed in the logistics industry, which is betting more than ever on railways.
Europe is investing in improving the freight transport network, European corridors, and interoperability to create a single railway space throughout the EU. However, to achieve true intermodality in European transport, it is necessary to increase investment in railway corridors and their connections with ports.
Although there is a railway freight network in Europe, it does not really function as a network due to the different gauges, electrification, signaling, and regulations in different countries. This makes transportation by train complicated and hinders its takeoff.
The EU and its member countries have implemented boost policies and announced multimillion-dollar investments to improve railway corridors and infrastructure, which means great development opportunities and new reliable solutions for international freight transport.
According to Mikel Lavin, these changes will finally allow railway transport to occupy the place it deserves in European logistics, and in 2023, the use of the railway network in Europe will triple.
